Freshman year of college is a very exciting time. You are meeting lots of new friends, living away from home for the first time and learning new things in your college classes. I had so much fun in my Freshman year; it is a time in my life that I will never forget. I wanted to put together a list of tips and things that I learned in my freshman year so that you know what to expect and make help make things easier and more fun!

Stay organized.

Everything and everyone around you is so new and it can be hard not to get overwhelmed by all of the changes. I found that I was able to enjoy all of these changes if I stayed organized with school work and social obligations. Find the time before you get to college to work out how you like to organize your life. You may like to use a phone calendar or paper diary. Whatever works best for you will help to make your freshman year less stressful and more fun!

Say yes.

Whenever I find myself in a new place, I find it is helpful to start by saying yes to everything. This way, you meet lots of people, enjoy new experiences, and take advantage of opportunities. Go to football games, join student organizations, grab a coffee with someone from your English class. This is a great tip for the start of your freshman year as you settle in and find your place at UC. Of course, do not overwhelm yourself with too much, and do not be afraid to say no if you feel you have taken too much on too quickly. This leads me to my next tip…

Find balance.

As the year goes on you will be able to get into a routine and find balance in your new college lifestyle. Make sure you find time to prioritize academic, social, and personal responsibilities equally.

Stay connected.

We are so lucky to live in a generation with phones and FaceTime. Don’t forget to stay in contact with family and friends from home. They will be keen to hear of all your exciting new experiences.
